I'm baa-aack

So I got really caught up in trip preparations, and then I was on the trip; hence the lack of blogging around here. But now I am back! China was amazing. I wish I could have seen more than we were able to fit in, particularly some of the countryside (since we spent the whole time in cities--Beijing and then Shanghai).

Some Things That Surprised Me:
-it's a lot easier to get by with a phrasebook and hand gestures than I would ever have expected.
-Beijing felt less foreign to me than London did (it's more of a Toronto-y kind of place).
-a 13 hour flight with a major airline is much more tolerable than a 7 hour flight with a discount airline.

Things I Miss About China:
-the weather--we had ten days of sun or partial cloud, no rain except early in the morning before we went out, temperatures in the high teens... *sighs* Whereas it was 4 C and spitting when we got into Toronto. Back to the winter jacket.
-the food--I could eat dumplings and steamed buns for breakfast every day.
-the haggling--I wasn't great at it, but it's fun having some control over what you pay.

Things I'm Glad To Get Back:
-tap water I know is (relatively) safe to drink
-the cats--and they missed us, too. I don't think Fiver stopped purring the whole first evening we were back.
-a consistent internet connection--I hardly did anything more than check my e-mail while I was away, and most of the blog type sites didn't work over there anyway. :P

I also have lots of pictures that I will get around to sorting through and posting some of in the near future, for those who like visuals. :D

Ditto! I find the phrasebook thing suprising too. I thought Mandarin was so very hard due to all the intonation.

I totally missed out on the fact that you were going to China! I'm glad you had a good time and had safe travels. Can't wait to see the pictures.

While you were gone many of us became addicted to goodreads.com. You should join up if you have the time. :)

I added you. :)

You should be able to find some familiar faces through my friends at my profile (Jenny/Somedaysawriter, Kurtis/Skutir, and Amanda/Libation) and then others you might know on their friends lists at their profiles. I think that's the best way of finding people on there.
