Wonder: Ghost Stories – Ouija Boards

When I was about 15, I bought myself a Ouija board. It wasn’t one of those nice, old-fashioned ones, but at least it was wood, and I figured it was good enough.

One evening I took it over to my best friend’s house. I was sleeping over, and the two of us were alone in the house. We turned off most of the lights and sat across from each other over the board, and waited for the ghosts to come. When the planchette started moving, we asked tons of questions–about who the speaker was and their life, and about things in our lives (mostly about boys).

The scariest moment was when the lamp that had been lighting the living room abruptly turned off. I think we both jumped about a foot in the air. Then my friend remembered that the lamps were on an automatic system to turn on and off (for when her family wasn’t home, to discourage burglers by making them think someone was home), and it wasn’t so scary any more.

Nothing the “ghosts” told us that night actually came true. And I wasn’t entirely surprised. After I got home the next day, I got out the Ouija board and tested the planchette. And I discovered that I could very easily move it without feeling like I was moving it. I knew I was directing it, but the sensation was as if my hand was being pulled. (This presumably is because of how smooth the board and the bottom of the planchette are.) So I’m sure neither of us cheated that night, but I’m equally sure we were in fact the ones moving the planchette.

How about you–got a Ouija board story to share?

Now that's interesting! Maybe the spirits could communicate by directing your hand to the links they want to view. :D

I actually do have a story for you. My then-best-friend and I played with her Ouija board just once together. I never touched another one again but I don't know if she did or not.

We were 10 and playing at her house in her room and asking all the 10 year old things... and we got thirsty. So we got up and got cokes... she went into the kitchen and I went to the door of her room- at least 10 feet from the board. Jokingly, she said "ask the ghost if it wants a coke" so, playing along, I did. The planchette flew to "yes". By itself. With no one touching it or even within arm's reach of it. Like total idiots, we put a full glass of coke on the mantel and went back to playing. 20 minutes later, the coke had 'evaporated'. Neither of us had been anywhere near the coke and neither of us had left the room.

Uh... you can keep those things far away from me!

Wow, that IS freaky! And a great story. I think I'd have gotten rid of my board real fast if something like that had happened.

I never played with a Ouija board or had a desire to so I've got no story for you.

I never did as a kid but as adults we did once . . . we kept getting the word RISEN. Once we asked "What is your name?" and got RISEN and then a series of letters, Q, F, L, U, A, M, N . . . somebody was writing stuff down and I didn't think much of these letters but later on my friend Paul said "Oh, spirit of Risen Qfluamn . . ." he got SO MAD when we all cracked up.

Hee hee, yes, I think our spirit ended up having some weird name, too.
