Musings on LOKI'S BOY

Current word count: 45,000 (five more chapters to go!)

In a way, writing LOKI'S BOY is how I imagine writing fanfiction would be. Except, it lets me do all the enjoyable bits (playing with established characters! reinterpreting existing plotlines! adding thematic tones to an already-developed world!) without the hassles that prevented me from ever getting into writing fanfiction (making sure characters with entire books/seasons devoted to them stay in character, down to the last personality quirk/hobby/backstory tidbit! having entire plotlines become alternate universe when a new book/episode comes out! keeping track of all the many details the exist in current fictional worlds!).

What makes the difference, I think, is the lack of source material. It's not like a whole book (or book series), or TV series, or whatever, with tons of material to keep track of. When it comes to the Norse myths, the early (most authentic) sources are pretty sparse. I find myself going back to the Eddas and other stories and poems, checking whether there's an established fact for what someone's hall was named or what exactly one dude said to the other, and most of the time, there isn't! Obviously if I was going to make Thor a weakling, or Freyja ugly, I'd have some 'splaining to do. And the chronology's kind of wacky, so I'm having to play with that as well as I can. But for the most part, I get to make things up, which is the fun part, after all.

And I've gotta tell you, writing Loki and Thor and the rest of them is some of the most fun I've had, ever. :D

P.S. For the first time I have a book-specific icon! Yay for mythological art!
