Life is strange

The apartment building we moved into in September has a separate key for the laundry room. Naturally, when we moved in, we were given a copy. It was a little difficult at first--the first time I tried to use it I stood there for a few minutes jiggling to no avail, until another resident came by, told me the laundry room keys were often sticky at first, and to try putting some soap on it--but after a bit we got the hang of it and I rarely had any trouble.

Because we only had the one key, and either of us might need to use it, we didn't keep it on a ring, just in a drawer with the rest of our laundry stuff.

So yesterday I put the key in my pocket and went to do laundry. It opened the door when I went to put the clothes in the washing machine. It opened the door when I went to switch them to the dryer. When I went to retrieve the clothes...

The key went in, but the lock wouldn't budge.

I stood there for five minutes working at it, got Chris and had him work at it, then tried again myself, and finally gave up. Luckily someone else came by the use the room and I was able to get in and get our clothes out.

This morning I went down to talk to the super. She took out one of the laundry keys from the office and compared it to mine.

"This isn't a laundry room key," she told me, holding them up together. Her key was about a 1/4 inch longer. We went to the laundry room together to check, and yes, her key opened the door. And mine still didn't.

Which means that either Chris and I have been using a not-laundry-room key* to open the laundry room for the last seven months, or sometime in the hour and a half between my putting the clothes in the dryer and going to get them, our key shrank by a quarter of an inch.

The universe is a strange and mysterious place.

Has anything mysterious happened to you lately?

*We know for sure it is the same key because a) I had no other keys in my pocket while I was doing the laundry, and that key that was in my pocket had already let me in twice; b) we don't even have any other keys-not-on-rings lying around in the apartment that I could have picked up by mistake. And yes, I checked the drawer to make sure some other key hadn't magically appeared there.

That would be the lamest fairy ever. The fairy who switches keys with slightly longer keys!

It would! Chris speculated that based on quantum physics at some point in time it had to happen that one person's key would randomly switch places with another person's key. In which case I feel sorry for the person who ended up with our laundry room key. ;)

<3 the Ed icon. We didn't have a working laundry room in my building for awhile because someone drove into it. I woke up one night to the sound of skidding tires and glass crashing everywhere, and failed at trying to do my laundry in the bathtub...

Crazy! Our laundry room is on the fifth floor so there's not much chance of it being driven into, thankfully.

The key didn't go through the hot wash and dryer by mistake?!? Keys are dry clean only! :P

Heh, no, the key was in the pocket of the pants I was wearing, not any being washed.

It's not exactly strange, but I did have a mountain lion stroll through my yard last week. Does that count?

I'd say it's pretty cool! The largest wildlife I've seen around here (well, not right around here, but at my parents' house which is not so downtown) is a fox.

There are lots of varmints that co-exist with humans. Wish the interface could be safe for both of us creatures. We are working with an environmental agency to safely shoo our guy (who it turns out is a girl with three teenagers!)into the higher levels where there are lots of deer.
