Writer At Work: Why I write

Because I can be having a crappy day and feel totally wretched, and then after an hour and a half on the laptop with my characters, I’m smiling again.

Yeah, writing — particularly for publication — can result in a whole lot of stress and anxiety. But you know what? It takes away far more than it brings. My life wouldn’t be half as happy without it. That’s why I write.

Can't not write
Bravo. I just read a new interview with Tina Wexler with this gem:

Q. What would you like to tell the teen writers out there that are looking to be published?

A. You write because you love it, because you can’t NOT write, and that’s a beautiful thing, your passion for writing. Don’t let the quest for publication ruin that for you EVER.

Re: Can't not write
That is excellent advice!

I've always known I would keep writing my whole life, even if I never got a book published. I think it's healthier for one's sanity to feel that the writing itself is the most important thing. That, at least, is the one thing an author has control over!

Same here. One reason I waited so long to start subbing, because though publication has always been a goal it's never been my motivation. I write because I love it. I know you do too. :)
