Some time last fall I caught a glimpse of a few minutes of a So You Think You Can Dance episode for the first time. (Yes, I pretty much live under a rock as far as TV is concerned. We use an antenna!) It caught my interest enough that I started watching the show. Right away, I was hooked: the talent of the contestants, even the ones who don’t make it all the way through, is astonishing, and the format means there’s always a variety of music and choreography.

One of the things I loved seeing the most was the chemistry developing between the pairs who continued to work together over the course of the first several episodes (something that’s sadly been missing from this season with the new format). It’s amazing, and I think useful as a writer, to see how much personality and emotion can come across without anything being said. My favorite pair, by far, was Legacy and Kathryn, especially after this routine which still gives me chills:

Also amazing is seeing dancers with no previous training, or training only in one style, completely absorb something totally different from anything they’ve ever done. Sadly, the video won’t let me embed it, but you really should check out Alex the ballet dancer proving he can hip hop with the best of them. Just goes to show you never know what hidden depths you might find if you push your characters–or yourself–out of the comfort zone!

And it’s probably because of this show that one of the characters in THE WAY WE FALL turned out to be a dancer. :)

Any other SYTYCD fans out there? Who are your faves this season?

Love SYTYCD. It's one of my favorite shows. This season has been so good. Did you catch Travis Wall's choreography number this week? AMAZING!

I love many of the dancer's this season, but like I said, I do miss the developing chemistry you used to see between the pairs. Haven't had a routine give me shivers yet this year. :(

I love this show SO much--and it's gotten to that point in the season where it's painful to watch anyone leave. So much talent!

I know! I am desperately afraid for Billy, who's one of my faves but keeps ending up in the bottom. At least he got to be on the show this year--I was so sad when he had to drop out last season!

I love this show! In fact, during the summer, it's the only show I watch every week, without fail. My favorites this year are Kent, Alex (sigh), and Lauren. I love Jose, but I don't think his dancing is up to par for him to remain on much longer...my favorite season ever was two summers ago, with Joshua and Twitch -- really, the entire top ten were unbelievably talented!

I'm so sad Alex had to go home early, especially after all he went through to get on the show. I really hope we see him next year ( and also that he'll be recovered in time for the tour! My brother and I are going). Lauren's been by far my fave girl since the start, and I agree with you about Jose--I like him a lot, but last week in particular it became clear he's not quite there yet.

Season four was great! So many great routines: Bleeding Love, the door one... :)

I still have to go all the way back to seasons 1 and 2--those are the only ones I haven't caught up on yet.
