The Nines

As promised, the opening to The Nines. Currently rather rough, but I think I've at least found the right place to start.

The Nines

Chapter One

The copter left Jonah in the middle of a wide, whispering street surrounded by houses of crumbling brick. It whirred back toward the city’s Core. Jonah watched it go. By the time it passed by the slender radio tower that surveyed the Core’s three walls, it was so small it could have been a sleek black beetle. The buildings beyond the wall shone silver in the mid-day sun. It looked like the cities he’d made when he was younger, of propped tins and scrap wire. It looked like a mirage.

Jonah swallowed. The air whipped up around him in a sudden gritty breeze which stung his eyes. He bowed his head toward his canvas satchel, blinking. So he had never been beyond the walls before. So he’d had no choice to come. He hadn’t cried as he’d squatted on the smelly rubber carpet of the copter, and he wasn’t going to cry now.

Now it is time for sleep.
